What to do in Riihimäki?
Cinema and theatre
The Riihimäki Theatre (Riihimäen Teatteri) is located in the same building as the hotel. In the summer, Teatteri Perikunta theatre company performs plays on the terrace of a downtown restaurant. The renowned Riihimäen Nuorisoteatteri is the largest basic-level theatre school in Finland. You can see their plays at Kino Sampo, which is located in a historically significant building from 1917. SPOTTI is a triennial children’s theatre event organised in Riihimäki. You can watch all the latest movies at the Bio Rex cinema in the town centre.
Museums and exhibitions
The Finnish Glass Museum (Suomen lasimuseo) exhibits a breath-taking array of glass items, and the Riihimäki Art Museum (Riihimäen taidemuseo) is located right next door to the hotel. At the Historical Museum of Riihimäki (Riihimäen kaupunginmuseo), you can learn about the local history and stop by at the café. The Hunting Museum of Finland (Suomen Metsästysmuseo) displays Finnish hunting culture, past and present. Valtakunnallinen Työväentalomuseo provides interesting information about the history of the labour movement in Finland. Galleria Tärinä is an art gallery operated by artists and located at the Matkakeskus shopping centre. There are also changing exhibitions at the Riihimäki library.
The Riihimäki live music scene is exuberant. Riihimäki Summer Concerts (Riihimäen kesäkonsertit) has grown over the decades to become an internationally acclaimed chamber music festival. The free summer concerts on the Granit square stage are very popular. Be sure to check out the Keikat – Riihimäki Facebook group for gigs and concerts in Riihimäki. Music events in Hyvinkää and Hämeenlinna are also within reach in just half an hour.
Glassmaking and design
The town of Riihimäki maintains a versatile network of sports facilities. The most important of these are the swimming hall and outdoor swimming pool, Peltosaari sports park, martial arts centre, Riutta recreational area, Vahteristo walking trail and the garrison’s fitness trail. There is also a frisbee golf course and a bowling alley in the town.
Riihimäki Trotting Track
The Riihimäki Trotting Track is located in the Juppala district, approximately two kilometres north from the town centre. It is one of Finland’s 23 summer racetracks. The track is used for trotting races and practice in the summer. The race schedule is available at the local trotting club website.
Car and motorcycle enthusiasts
In summertime, car and motorcycle enthusiasts meet at the Ullan Pakari bakery car park on Wednesday evenings. Cruising events are also organised, and the one on May Day is especially popular. More information is available at the Riihimäen Hot Rod Association website. The racing tracks in Hyvinkää and Hämeenlinna are also within a short distance.
The Puuhamaa amusement park is only a 15-minute drive away in Tervakoski, Janakkala.
The Vesilinna tower was built in 1952. The buildings was designed as a water tower and observation tower. A café is located on the observation deck. The Café bar Torni is open in the summer whenever the flag is raised.
Hatlamminsuo is the single most prestigious place of natural environment in Riihimäki. For the most part, it is an untouched raised bog, but a total of 40 different bog types can be found in the area.
